If your scientists have a level cap at 5, don’t bother researching any anomalies that are greater than skill level 5 until you have built your third or fourth science ship. To speed up the process you should also make a second science ship and allow them to do the same thing. Like playing any other empire, it’s very important that right off the bat you assign a scientist and start surveying every system as soon as possible.
